This one is technically DIFFERENT than the one from the Object mode. See here. http://www.bforartists.de/content/object-mode-subdivision-set-needs-menu... . This one adds a so called Multires modifier, not a SDS modifier.

With hotkey Ctrl 0 up to Ctrl 5 you can set the subdivision level of the selected object. What it does is to add a Multires modifier, and set the sds level to the corresponding value of the hotkey. You could also do this by hand. But this workflow here is much faster and more convenient.

This functionality has no menu entry. A functionality without menu entry is no go.

Task: add menu entry for this functionality. I would vote to add this to the tool shelf. A modal button row from none (when we can add a modifier by input nodes, then we should be able to remove it too), then 0 to 5 ...

Technically different, but the UI code is the same. What modifier gets added must be mode dependand.

Fixed in keymap branch.
